Song analysis.
Ethan and I created an interview with the songwriter, Jamie, to properly understand the songs meaning. It helped us a lot and gave us a good insight to what Jamie's interpretation of the song was. We can use this video to help crew and performers gain a better understanding so they can perform in their roles better. Below are the lyrics and also how Ethan, the drummer, interpreted the song and video.
What for?
What for?
They say have you seen those kids,
All black and blue,
Nothing to do,
They grin through life with majesty
Oh the realms of the unwell,
I suppose you pay as you go,
Its a youth culture horror show,
Yeah we cant handle coming down,
In every single way ,
We hedge our bets,
With the chance we may never,
What for?
Are you satisfied,
Yeah you know we cant handle coming down
What for?
Yeah it chills your bones to feel,
That warped within reality,
So carry on now we have all the time,
Sometimes we might just cross the line,
But thats fine Im with those mates of mine,
I know them all so well though,
Yeah we cant handle coming down
In every single way
We hedge our bets
With the chance we may never get
What For?
Are you satisfied,
Yeah you know we cant handle coming down
What for?
They say have you seen those kids,
All black and blue,
Nothing to do,
They grin through life with majesty
Oh the realms of the unwell,
I suppose you pay as you go,
Its a youth culture horror show,
Yeah we cant handle coming down,
In every single way ,
We hedge our bets,
With the chance we may never,
What for?
This is a quote from Ethan's website which I think very accurate interpretation of what the song means, I fully agree with this statement
'What we have taken from this interview is that the song is about the rebellious side of youth, getting up to no good and maybe part taking in social activities that are not considered acceptable. Drinking alcohol and drug abuse, seen as positive experiences with friends and although the effects of this abuse is negative people remain positive. Its all about having a good time and worrying about the consequences later.'
Clearly the song questions the morality and thought process of activities young people undertake to have a good time. This is an excellent theme to focus the narrative on as it is different and can be as complex as we wish it to be.
Rather than basing the narrative on specific lyrics, like many music videos do, we will focus the narrative on the overall theme of the song; a young person abusing drugs and finally paying the price. Although this is quite dark, we will try and find a way to suit the lighthearted and energetic feel to the song.
