Genres.
There is a type of music video for pretty much every genre available. The popularity of genres changes based on location; for example country music is very popular in the USA however Latin music is more popular in South America. There are however, a number of genres which are somewhat popular all over the world. These genres include: R&B, Rock, Pop, HipHop, Alternative and country.
I believe for our music video to be a success we need to make it appeal to as many people as possible, therefore we should avoid niche genres, with small fan bases and instead should choose a more common type of music. Below is a number of genres of music we could do, with brief advantages and disadvantages of choosing a song within that genre.

Alternative
Alternative, also known as 'indie', has always been popular but has grown more appealing to younger audiences. Examples include Oasis, Nirvana, Green Day, U2, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Artic Monkeys and The Kooks. I personally enjoy listening to this genre and believe that it is the most likely genre to be used as a foundation for our music video. Alternative music often has meaningful lyrics or storylines that we can use.
Dance
Choosing the dance genre would involve high energy shots and fast cuts to match the speed of the music. The focus would be on the performance aspects rather than narrative, if there would even be the need for a narrative as the majority of dance songs are without lyrics. This may nit be a suitable genre as we would like to concentrate on a strong storyline to make the piece memorable to the viewer, which may not be possible from this type of music. Examples of artists that produce dance music include Zedd, Clean Bandit and LMFAO.
Country
The country genre is certainly the least popular and therefore is least likely to be the chosen genre for our music video. This genre originates from the USA and grew in popularity primarily because of Taylor Swift (country-pop). However, our target market is predominantly young people in the UK and therefore this will be an unsuitable style of music. Examples of artists that produce country music include Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley.

Rock
Rock is perhaps the most popular genre among anyone upwards of eighteen. There are a variety of types of rock including; metal, alternative, heavy and punk, which appeal to a huge variety of music lovers. I would like to make a video for a slower, more meaningful rock song to be able to focus on lyrics more without high paced cuts throughout. Examples of rock bands include Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Metalicca, AC/DC and The Who.
Pop
Pop music is very popular among children, teenagers and some adults so we would have a wide choice of songs to choose from that would be appealing to a wide audience. However I dislike this genre personally so would be unmotivated throughout the project. Examples of pop music artists include Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Maroon5, Justin Timberlake and Jessie J.
HipHop
It is highly unlikely that we will use this genre for our music video however it is still worth writing about. HipHop is mainly rap artists rapping over beats. Lyrics are normally very materialistic or focus on money, women or drug use and therefore it isn't appropriate for this project. It is a predominantly black genre of music and therefore I don't believe it is appropriate to make a serious hiphop video as it may cause offence by seeming like we are mocking the videos. Examples of hip hop artists include Tupac, Dr Dre, Eminem, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar.

After careful consideration from every member of the group we have chosen to use a song from within the Alternative/Rock genres because of the advantages they have over the other genres. As we now have chosen a genre/s, we must now choose a song which would be appropriate for our music video.
